N900 plays WebOs games

It's great to see that the Nokia underdog phone the N900 is capable of a lot of things, whether its running android, ubuntu or playing games from other platforms. This is why Nokia support similar methods of developing native Linux apps, namely SDL 1.2. Because the Palm Pre and the N900 share almost the same hardware (OMAP3430, PowerVR SGX, Open GL ES 2.0 support) you have great opportunities for cross-platform gaming. Some Maemo fanatics have taken this to heart and have released a "Preenv" package for the N900 that allows the phone to run unmodified webOS games.
Best of all no jailbreaking or rooting is needed, there's all the more reason for a developer to be attracted to MeeGo and webOS in the future.

Leak: LG Android Phone

This image has surface on the web, very little detail has been shared. What we do know is that we're looking at "a future LG high end Android phone for Verizon (probably available in Europe under Vodafone)," but it is possible to claim a few things: one, and perhaps most clear you can just barely make out an LTE logo at the downside of the back. That makes this one of the six-odd LTE phones Verizon has claimed to release in the first half of next year. Also it's got an HD camera, rumours suggest either 720p or 1080p capture. And to conclude, it seem to have a huge, mirrored display and possibly a front-facing camera in the right corner. Looks like there's also a WiFi logo on back (of course). 2 logo's I can't identify, can you?

HTC Knight Leaks

Very little is known about the new HTC Knight, it popped up on XDA-developers forum. The source claimed the phone is for Sprint and navigates Android using capacitive touchscreen keys.

Also the XML file which the source leaked tells us users should not "slide screen in/out" during activation. This certainly suggests that we're looking at a slider, but it dosn't need to be a physical QWERTY keyboard because HTC has released a model with a slide-out speaker bar.

Gingerbread

Cupcake, donut, eclair, froyo these are all Android firmware names. For every firmware version Google has put giant decoration around Googleplex. The latest decoration is a giant Gingerbread man, these decorations are only added when a new firmware is on the way, so we're wagering that Android 3.0 (or is it 2.3?) will be officially unveiled in the very short future.

Nokia and Qt

Today Nokia presented the future of nokia and its software platform. Qt  app development will be the focus for Nokia which will be the framework across both MeeGo and Symbian. Nokia will also develop its own future UI applications using Qt.
The planned and future development of the higher layers of Symbian OS itself will be based on Qt; Nokia states that it will "allow a continuous improvement of the Symbian experience" and, critically, will be compatible with the existing Symbian^3 platform and devices. This confirms that all S^3 systems (nokia N8) will get future updates and UI improvements planned for S^4. From now on Nokia will refer to Symbian instead of S^1,2,3,4.
Nokia highlighted Qt's robustness and status as a tried and tested framework, together with its ability to quickly create rich, intuitive and visually attractive applications.

It seems Nokia are busy at work reorganizing their strategies!

HTC 7 Mozart

So Htc released a new phone, this time not with android but with the WP7 OS. According to critics it is the best WP7 phone which has been released. It has two main selling points: an aluminum unibody construction (just like the Nexus One and Legend), and its 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash (as opposed to 5 megapixels with LED flash on the other WP7 devices). Seems like a great phone, HTC has been doing very well the last few years.

Tablets

Tablets, they seem to be the next big thing in technology. Apple kickstarted the tablet industry by releasing the Ipad, many say it is just a giant Iphone. But in essence isn't that what a tablet is (becomming)? All tablets which are bound to be released have a 3g connectivity option, it offers you the option to go online anywhere anytime. So a tablet is actually a big smartphone. I thougt it had became a race who could make the smallest mobile phone, but with the 4g and the Evo it changed, big displays are the way forward. So how long before the gap between a smartphone and a tablet will be closed?

T-Mobile G2 overclocked

The T-Mobile's G2 (which is a rebranded HTC Vision) has been overclocked by XDA-developers member coolbho3000. He has posted his overclock code, which makes an already fast phone even quicker. The dev started at a 1GHz, and pushed it all the way to 1.42GHz. Eventhough T-Mobile did everything they could te prevent anyone form hacking the system (which is pointless). You can download all you need here.

webOS 2.0

So Palm released it webOS 2.0, according to engaget the best mobile OS together with IOS. But what is good software with lacking hardware? In a sense you could say that licensing would be the best option for Palm as their hardware has always been below par. But the takeover from HP might have saved them from the doom scenario in which Palm was heading. HP has the knowledge and capital to relaunch Palm with high-end hardware, which then be combined with high-end software. But after seeing the Pre 2 I must say I am not impressed, its basicly what the Pre should have been in the first place, technology wise that is. I wonder if the hardware durability is any good. Is the Pre 2 the savior of Palm? I hope they have some killer hardware announcements soon cause with the Palm 2 as a flagship phone Palm will sink..

CEO Fight!

Everyone knew Steve wouldn't get away with bashing RIM with an competition-slamming manifesto without some snap back from the competition. We've already heard responses from TweetDeck and Andy Rubin, and now RIM's co-CEO Jim Balsillie has his say on Steve's statement:

"For those of us who live outside of Apple's distortion field, we know that 7-inch tablets will actually be a big portion of the market and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience. We also know that while Apple's attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options and customers want to fully access the overwhelming majority of web sites that use Flash. We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter. Apple's preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM's August-ending quarter doesn't tell the whole story because it doesn't take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger than summer months, nor does it explain why Apple only shipped 8.4 million devices in its prior quarter and whether Apple's Q4 results were padded by unfulfilled Q3 customer demand and channel orders. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story."
Mr Balsillie does have some good and relevent points! Don't you think?

Meego

So symbian is a sinking ship they say, S^3 was nice but nothing near IOS or Android. So will Meego do it? Meego is a colaboration of Intel and Nokia and is ment to be the OS for Nokia's high end devices. No handsets have been announced yet but Nokia stated they would this year. Some videos have surfaced such as this one:

I say Meego all the way!

Whatsapp symbian

Great news for symbian users, the popular smartphone-to-smartphone messenger/chat application is set to be released on the symbian platform. The app allows users to carry conversations in real time with mobile contacts over an internet data connection. The biggest advantage of WhatsApp is that it is a cross platform application which creates the ability for iPhone ,BlackBerry, Android en Symbian users to message each other.

According to the official WhatsApp twitter they company is actively working on a Symbian and Android version of the popular application.

@MADekker yes, we are working on it: http://twitpic.com/1bfiop http://twitpic.com/1bfisx

Great news for N97 (mini) and other Symbian platform users! Another big advantage of Whatsapp is that it uses your mobile number as user name, it searches in your phone book for other Whatsapp users which makes it a very easy application to use.

We will keep you updated if any new developments appear!

Live messenger

For some aparent reason Nokia or Microsoft pulled the S60 v5 version of the populair Live messenger from the Ovi store. The application seemed to work fine with good touchscreen support. Thanks to active users a mirror was created for those who did not originally download it from the Ovi store.

Installed on the N97 (mini) you have the option to use the Hotmail mail service in the messaging menu. You can also access the camera during your chat to send photo's and videos. The application can also be run in the background and will notify when a friend is chatting.

Notice: I have tested the application and it seems to run fine, the reason why it was pulled from the Ovi store is unknown. So use at own risk! Download Live Messenger for s60 v5 here
